Art is
a wide term. It involves a lot of
things: literature, music, dance, architecture (more in
Architecture of Russia),
painting, cinema, theater and etc.
So better
travel Russia and make
sure that Russia has
its representatives in all subdivisions of art. Rich heritage is left
for
today's generation. It is carefully observed and is renewed with new
achievements every day.
Literature
If one has never traveled to Russia, in any case, one knows
its famous writers. The most eminent of them lived and worked in
19-20th
centuries. Those are so-called "
the Golden Age" and "
the
Silver Age" of Russian
literature. The first one begins with the poet
Pushkin and ends with two of the greatest writers
F. Dostoevsky and L. Tolstoy. Their works are translated into many
languages.
The beginning of the 20th
century is the Silver Age of Russian poetry. All the names that will be
listed below are well-known to a well-educated person: A.
Akhmatova,S.Esenin, A. Blok, V. Bryusov,
M. Tsvetaeva,
N. Gumilyov, V. Mayakovsky, etc.. M.
Bulgakov and M. Gorky can easily characterize prose of those times.
Soviet Union (more facts from

of Russia) presented the world with such names as the Nobel
Prize
winner M. Sholokhov, V. Kataev, A.
Tolstoi,B.
Pasternak, A. Platonov, O. Mandelstam, K. Paustovsky and
other.
Music
Travel Russia,
listen to its music and songs because it's one of the best ways to
understand how the nation thinks. In Russia, there are extremely
different schools of music. Everybody can choose what one likes:
classical music (e.g. Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov), soviet music (e.g.
Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, rock (e.g.
Splean, Mashina Vremeni), heavy metal (e.g. Aria), pop/rock
(e.g. Dima Bilan, Linda) and so on.
Painting
Certainly, when you travel Russia, you may visit a church
(see
Where
to go and when in Russia). No matter which one you
go to but
100% you'll see icons (in orthodox churches). The saints are depicted
on
them. The tradition to paint icons is rather ancient and each icon is
unique. Icons help people to become closer to the spiritual world.
As for painters, the 18th century brought Antropov,
Borovikovskii, Levitskii, Nikitin etc., the 19th - Bashkirtseva,
Briullov,
Levitan, Nesterov, Repin, Serov, Shchedrin, Vasnetsov, Venetsianov,
Vrubel; 20th - Benois, Chagall, Filonov, Goncharova, Kandinskii,
Larionov, Popova, Rozanova and so on.
Dance (ballet)
Russian ballet has a strong school. Russian dancers give
performances on a tour all around the world. The Mariinsky Ballet is
like the basis of the whole ballet school. The famous names
are: O.Preobrajenska, M. Kschessinska, A. Pavlova, G.
Ulanova, M. Baryshnikov, M. Plisetskaya, I. Kuznetsov etc.
