The Soviet Union had a centralized system of transportation control. It
could be so that one department was responsible for roads, railroads,
aircraft, maritime transport, there were no private companies that
could be competitive with state institutions, that's why nowadays,
there are many issues that need to be solved urgently.
Russian
roads didn't use the popularity during the
times of the Soviet
Union, a part of
history
of Russia.
The government believed that the cars were useless for a soviet citizen
and excessive luxury, that's why there was low demand for building new
roads. Nowadays, the Russian Federation began to feel the Soviet
influence and lack of roads. Road system needs foreign investments to
be improved.
Railroads are the main way of transportation in
Russia on both
levels of passenger and cargo transportation. After the collapse of the
Soviet Union, railroad structure had great problems, as the whole
economic system experienced declines. Nevertheless, it's very
convenient way of transportation in Russia as it has enormous territory
(see
Maps of
Russia).
The Trans-Siberian railroad, the biggest rail trip in the world. It
stretches from Moscow to Vladivostok, it's a great
entertainment
and opportunity to cross Russia from west to east. It's cheaper than
using of airplanes, and
for a person with an average income is better to use railroads.
Air service once centralized by the Soviet system,
the company
Aeroflot, now suggests more than 2500 airports (both on state and
private levels). The biggest airports in Moscow are Sheremetyevo and
Domodedovo. When you
travel Russia
and have limitations in time, you'd better use airplanes to see more:
starting from Moscow and
St.
Petersburg and ending with Vladivostok.
Maritime transportation is also important for
Russian
transportation system. As a traveler, you can enjoy water tours down
its main rivers Neva, Volga etc. During such trips, you will be able to
see many new places that characterize Russia.
As for public transportation in the cities, the main are buses. Only

St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Kazan',
