The Soviet Union had a centralized system of transportation control. It could be so that one department was responsible for roads, railroads, aircraft, maritime transport, there were no private companies that could be competitive with state institutions, that's why nowadays, there are many issues that need to be solved urgently.

Russian roads didn't use the popularity during the times of the Soviet Union, a part of history of Russia. The government believed that the cars were useless for a soviet citizen and excessive luxury, that's why there was low demand for building new roads. Nowadays, the Russian Federation began to feel the Soviet influence and lack of roads. Road system needs foreign investments to be improved.

Railroads are the main way of transportation in Russia on both levels of passenger and cargo transportation. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, railroad structure had great problems, as the whole economic system experienced declines. Nevertheless, it's very convenient way of transportation in Russia as it has enormous territory (see Maps of Russia). The Trans-Siberian railroad, the biggest rail trip in the world. It stretches from Moscow to Vladivostok, it's a great entertainment and opportunity to cross Russia from west to east. It's cheaper than using of airplanes, and for a person with an average income is better to use railroads.

Air service once centralized by the Soviet system, the company Aeroflot, now suggests more than 2500 airports (both on state and private levels). The biggest airports in Moscow are Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo. When you travel Russia and have limitations in time, you'd better use airplanes to see more: starting from Moscow and St. Petersburg and ending with Vladivostok.

Maritime transportation is also important for Russian transportation system. As a traveler, you can enjoy water tours down its main rivers Neva, Volga etc. During such trips, you will be able to see many new places that characterize Russia.

As for public transportation in the cities, the main are buses. Only seven cities have metro (underground system): Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Kazan', and Samara. This rapid system make easier for people to reach a necessary place.
