The Russian Federation as a a great
country has the
most unique climate in
the world. It is formed under the influence of several main factors.
They are:
*the huge size;
*remoteness from the sea;
*mountains ( the south and the east).
In European and Asian Russia, climates are continental (except for the
extreme southeast and the tundra). The
exceptions
are:
*moderate maritime climate - Kaliningrad Oblast (please, refer
to
maps of Russia);
*monsoonal climate - the Russian Far East;
*a narrow, subtropical zone of Russia gives a great opportunity to have
a rest near the Black Sea.
Due to such geographical position, there are only two predominant
seasons:
winter and
summer.
Spring and
autumn are mainly
concise periods between extremely low and high temperatures.
It's better to travel to Russia
during the
summer. The warmest month is usually
July.
Northern and Central European Russia has the most varied climate in
the country. For example, in Archangel the average temperature is
above 60°F only in June, July, and August. At Tiksi,
summer
lasts for several weeks in July when the average high temperature may
exceed 50°F.
Southern European territory of Russia is hot and dry during the summer
months, record temperatures are between 90 and 95°F (
June and
August).
In the East of the Ural Mountains, summer is a warm,
even enjoyable
period of time, when one can
travel
to Russia and see the picturesque nature (please, refer to
where to go and
when in Russia), though it occurs to be rather brief and
moist.
The Russian Far East presents various types of climate. Many
inland areas are quite hot and
temperatures reach 104°F.
Along the coastal regions, the cold East Sea make
temperatures cooler. In July, an average temperature
in Magadan is 56°F. In Vladivostok, August
brings the
highest
temperatures (average - 72°F).
Winter gives opportunities for almost all people in
Russia to
enjoy winter sports because snow cover in southern Russia remains 60 -
80 days and 260-280 days in the Far North. Average January
temperatures are:
*in Yakutsk (in east-central Siberia) - -43°C :
*in the West Siberian Plain – 27°C ;
*in St. Petersburg (please, refer to
Sightseeings
and Attractions of Russia) - -8°C .
The coldest month is January (on the sea coasts it is February).
The
Black Sea can be called an exception as here the temperatures are
about 47°F during the winter, but if to speak about
Russia
generally, winters are rather cold. Above the Arctic Circle,
people don't see sunshine during 6 months. Temperatures across the
Russian
Federation can reach extremely cold levels. Temperatures in
winter fall to -31°F to -58°F.
Travel Russia and be
happy!
